LOOK: The Largest Pumpkin Ever Grown in the United States Was Just Crowned

It weighed in at a whopping 2,363 pounds!

October 11, 2017

It’s a new American record! A retired firefighter from Washington state broke the U.S. record for the plumpest pumpkin ever plucked here in the United States.

Just how heavy did Joel Holland’s overgrown gourd weigh in at? Well, his fantastic fruit tipped the scales at a whopping 2,363 pounds on Monday. Holland’s pumpkin took home the top prize at the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, California.

Participants travel from all over to show off their large fruit. Yes, they transported their pumpkins on large trailers to Monday’s competition, which is an annual tradition. Cranes are used to put the pumpkins on the scale for the big weigh-in.

In fact, here’s a behind-the-scenes look from the competition:

Holland’s winning pumpkin may be the largest ever weighed in the United States, but is actually the second largest ever grown in the world. That record remains in Germany for a pumpkin that weighed in at 2,624 pounds last October.

We hope Holland's family is a fan of pumpkin pies, roasted pumpkin seeds, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin salads, pretty much anything pumpkin flavored now that they have a solid 20 to 30 year supply of pumpkin guts! They're probably okay though, considering this Pacific Northwest famer is no stranger to plentiful pumpkins. He's actually won this competition seven times.

What is the prize for a gourd this great? The competition pays a sweet $7 per pound to the winner. So, we did the math, that means Holland's pumpkin is worth a cool $16,541.
